Drunken Sailor – March 1894

What shall we do with a drunken sailor?

Shouting out to strangers that you have smallpox is not a very good idea.

As noted in the 27 March 1894 issue of the Hawaiian Gazette, a drunk sailor did just that:

Transcript:
Sorry He Spoke.
A sailor formerly on the whaling bark Horatio called at the police station on Saturday night in a drunken condition. He startled the people there by informing them in a loud voice that he had the smallpox. The health authorities were communicated with and the man was examined. The doctor decided that he was a well man, but as a precaution he was sent to the quarantine station, where he will remain for a few days.
