Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel – San Francisco
In the Fisherman’s Wharf area, tucked away along an access road to Pier 45, is the Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel. It is dedicated to the memory of the seafarers who have been lost at sea.
A plaque to the right of the doors says the following:
MEMORIAL CHAPEL
THE FISHERMAN’S AND SEAMEN’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL HAS GRACED FISHERMAN’S WHARF AS A LANDMARK SINCE 1981. TODAY, IT STANDS AS THE FULFILLMENT OF A DEBT OF GRATITUDE, LONG OVERDUE THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE ENRICHED SAN FRANCISCO’S MARITIME HRITAGE [sic]. PROUDLY ON THE WALLS, INSIDE THE VIBRANT ECUMENICAL CHAPEL, HANG BRONZE PLAQUES, WITH THE NAMES OF THOSE WHOSE LIVES THE SEA HAS CLAIMED. WHEN THE CARILLON BELLS OF THE CAMPANILE TOLL, IT REMINDS ALL OF THE WHARF’S LEGACY WITH THE SEA AND OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE DEDICATED THEIR LIVES TO THE SEA AND ITS HARVESTS.
