Views of Tacoma, Washington
In addition to Portland and Seattle, Maritime Hawai‘i managed a short visit to Tacoma, Washington to have a look at the waterfront there.
The Murray Morgan Bridge, originally known as the 11th Street Bridge, is a vertical-lift bridge that spans the Thea Foss Waterway. It was renamed in 1997 in honor of Murray Morgan (1916–2000), who was a well-known Pacific Northwest author, historian, and educator. He worked as a bridgetender of the bridge in the 1950s.
Opened in 1913, the bridge is currently on the United States National Register of Historic Places.
The Thea Foss Waterway separates downtown Tacoma from the Port of Tacoma. It was known as the City Waterway until 1989, when it was renamed in honor of Thea Foss (1857–1927). She was the founder of Foss Maritime.
