Mahalo to Hawai‘i’s Maritime Community
In the wake of the wildfire that started on 8 August 2023 and swept through and destroyed the historic town of Lāhainā, Hawai‘i’s maritime community has stepped up to provide much-needed kōkua to the island of Maui.
Hawaii Stevedores (ILWU Local 142) & Pasha Hawaii are collecting non-perishable food, bottled water, new or lightly used towels and blankets, toiletries, diapers, and clothing. Saturday, 12 August 2023 at 0800 at Pier 1, Honolulu Harbor. Call 808.538.2147 for more information.
Inlandboatmen’s Union of the Pacific (ILWU Marine Division) is donating essential supplies.
Matson is working with federal, state, and Maui officials to determine what equipment and critical supplies are needed. The company’s barge Haleakala will arrive at Kahului Harbor on 11 August 2023.
P&R Water Taxi collected supplies and will be shipping them to Kahului Harbor on board its vessel Kahana II, which will arrive at Kahului Harbor on 11 August 2023.
Young Brothers is sending a barge to Kahului Harbor with supplies and equipment for companies (Hawaiian Telcom, Verizon, AT&T) and organizations (Aloha Care, Kaiser Permanente, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii).
Special mahalo to the United States Coast Guard for rescuing and evacuating those who fled into the ocean to escape the fire.
