Sanderling (Calidris alba)
Hawaiian Name: Hunakai
The sanderling is a migratory sandpiper (Family Scolopacidae) that breeds during the summer in areas above the Arctic Cirle and winters in Hawai‘i and a number of other locations. This small shorebird is notable for its foraging behavior in the intertidal zone, where it can be seen running along the beach following the ebb and flow of waves.
They are recognized as indigenous by the State of Hawai‘i.
