Falls of Clyde – 15 November 2021 Update

Falls of Clyde

Falls of Clyde at Pier 7, Honolulu Harbor. 6 November 2021.

There is a new chapter in the nearly 143-year saga of the National Historic Landmark ship, Falls of Clyde.

The following is quoted in full from the post published today on the Falls of Clyde – International’s Facebook page:

Following on from the COP26 event, held recently here in Glasgow, Falls of Clyde International Ltd are pleased to announce that our bid to remove the Falls of Clyde historic tall ship, from Honolulu Harbour, has been accepted by the state officials at the Department of Transportation (Harbours) in Hawaii. This will be subject to our full compliance with U.S./Hawaii procurement requirements and U.S. Tax and Labour laws.

Now we can work with engineering support to make plans to bring her home to Scotland, where it is planned that she will be rebuilt to sail the oceans as she once did. It is proposed that having established significant new technology contacts at the recent COP26 event—and in typical Clyde Shipbuilding history—she will become a demonstrator vessel for clean emission innovative technologies.

We are happy to talk to potential partners, solutions providers, event sponsors and investors, interested in clean emission Sailcargo, education at sea and skills training with communities as part of the process.

She is finally coming home!

Donations to help rebuild the Falls of Clyde can made at www.foci.scot

We are setting up other platforms to make it easy to support this effort.

Maritime Hawai‘i would like to congratulate Falls of Clyde – International and is grateful for the organization’s dedication to see that Falls of Clyde gets another chance to live on.

The ship has endured much over the years during her careers as a cargo (and occasional passenger) ship; a sailing oil tanker; a stripped-down bunkering vessel; and, finally, a museum ship.

Maritime Hawai‘i is cautiously optimistic about the old girl’s future.

Just a story; My name is James Ahina Awana Jr. I was born may 12, 1935 aboard the SS WAIALEALE between Kauai and Oahu. On my 50th birthday my parents held a surprise birthday party for me aboard THE FALLS OF CLYDE. See Bob Krause article in the Honolulu Star Bulletin on or about 12 may 1985. ALOHA J AWANA JR

      Aloha Mr. Awana!

Thank you for your post! I looked online, and found the story (Honolulu Advertiser, 13 May 1985). Unfortunately, it was only the first part on page A-1. It was continued on A-4, which I was not able to access.

What a great story! I wish the rest was available to read.
