Oops…Unauthorized Entry

On 18 July 2021, Galen Diana, a sailboat that was a support vessel* for the Great Pacific Race, entered Honolulu Harbor and motored leisurely toward Kapālama Channel. Matson’s Maunawili (IMO 9268538), which had arrived a short time earlier, was conducting a lifeboat (starboard) drill in the channel off Pier 53.

It was unclear what Galen Diana intended to do as she approached Maunawili.

*Private (non-commercial) vessel traffic into Honolulu Harbor is restricted and is allowed in the harbor only after obtaining proper authorization. Large signs facing seaward at harbor entry points along the Main and Kalihi channels state that unscheduled vessels that wish to enter the harbor must first contact the United States Coast Guard and Aloha Tower harbor traffic control.
