OE35 Wave Energy Converter Buoy
OceanEnergy is a company based in Cobh (Cork), Ireland. Its OE35 Wave Energy Converter Buoy was built by Vigor Industrial in Portland, Oregon.
The distinctive OE35 arrived in Hawaiian waters at the end of 2019. A traditional blessing and ceremony was held on 10 December 2019 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
According to Demonstration of the Ocean Energy [sic] (OE) Buoy at US Navy’s Wave Energy Test Site, a presentation by Professor Tony Lewis (Chief Technology Officer at OceanEnergy) published on the website of the United States Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy:
The Ocean Energy [sic] (OE) Buoy is based on the floating oscillating water column which uses variability in wave height to move air through an air turbine. The turbine rotates in a single direction using high-speed air flow to generate electricity.
The air turbine is the white, circular structure in the photo above.
