Launched in 1968, Alex Haley was originally commissioned as the United States Navy salvage ship, USS Edenton. She was acquired by the United States Coast Guard in 1999 and was renamed after Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Alex Haley. Mr. Haley served in the Coast Guard from 1939 to 1959.
