Aloha Lurline
Maritime Hawai‘i has learned from Captain Doug Pine that Matson’s SS Lurline is being towed from the Seattle, Washington area to be scrapped.
She was built by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and launched in 1973. She provided service between Hawai‘i and the Mainland until a few years ago, when she was laid up.
The storied name Lurline will live on. According to a Matson press release, a new ConRo ship that is scheduled to be delivered in 2019 will be the next vessel to be christened Lurline.
Farewell, old girl.
